Venice, Italy

There are so many romantic countries and cities to visit and we have already named a couple. Another city that comes to mind when I think of romance would have to be Venice. Venice, Italy is a city that emanates beauty, culture, and of course great food. There are quite a few events that take place in Venice two of the most common events being the La Biennale di Venezia and the Carnevale di Venezia.

The citizens of Venice host the famous La Biennale di Venezia in odd numbered years as a part of their biennial modern art exposition. During this Biennale you are able to see the features of painters, sculptors, and performance artists that come from around the world. Most of this event takes place at the famous Giardini Pubblici, the Cordierie dell’Arsenale, and also at the Museum Correr. They hold this wonderful exhibition between mid-June and mid-July.

The carnevale di Venezia is akin to Louisiana’s Mardi Gras. The party begins eight days before Lent, in the winter, and everyone who joins in the celebration will participate in pageants, commedia dell’arte, concerts, balls, and ‘masked self display’. The party doesn’t end till Shrove Tuesday. The Carnevale has been a tradition for Venice since the 1600’s. The word ‘carnevale’ comes from the Latin word for ‘farewell to meat’.

If you find yourself visiting Venice in between all the festivities and prefer the quiet and normal life of the Venetians then there are still many things you will be able to do, many of them being quite romantic. One of the more romantic and relaxing thing you can do with your special someone is to go on the Gondola Serenade Tour.

The Gondola Serenade Tour takes you on a ride across the Mediterranean. The whole ride you are being serenaded by a guitarist who helps brings Venice to life as you pass it by. The tour is 50 minutes long and you will be able to see some of the most historic landmarks such as the Church of Santa Monica and the Bridge of Sighs.

When it comes to meals, the venetians pride themselves on making it a great experience. Breakfast in Venice usually includes rich Italian coffee with hot milk, a hard roll or two, and a sweet cornetto (croissant) filled with a dab of peach or apricot jelly. Lunch is taken seriously in Italy, so don’t grab a table in a sit-down restaurant unless you’re willing to order a full meal.

Instead, visit one of the many snack bars where you’ll find sandwiches displayed in the window. Point at a sandwich, ask for an ombra (glass of wine), and grab a few inches of space at the crowded bar, unless your feet are sore from sightseeing, in which case you might want to pay a higher price for table service.
